Gondola Shelving
Gondola shelving refers to freestanding, metal shelving units that can be placed anywhere on a retail floor. Unlike wall-mounted shelving, gondola units are double-sided or single-sided and can be arranged into aisles, islands, or perimeter walls. They are the go-to shelving solution for grocery stores, convenience stores, pharmacies, pet supply shops, beauty supply stores, liquor stores, hardware stores, and general merchandise retailers. Their adjustable shelves and peg-board or slatwall backs make them highly adaptable to almost any product type or store layout.
To learn more, check out our blog post: Master the Art of Setting Up Gondola Shelving for Your Retail Store.
Single-sided gondola shelving (also called wall units) is designed to sit flush against a wall, with shelves and merchandise visible from one side only. Double-sided gondola shelving (also called aisle or island units) has shelves on both sides, allowing customers to browse from either direction making them ideal for creating store aisles and maximizing your floor space.
Store Displays® carries both configurations. Browse our full selection of gondola shelving including double-sided starter units, add-on units, single-sided wall units, and end caps.
Gondola shelving is available in a range of heights to suit different retail environments. Standard heights typically range from 48 inches to 84 inches, though units can reach up to 96 inches or taller for high-capacity storage. Taller gondola units are especially useful for retailers without a back storage room, as the upper shelves can double as storage space. Shelf depth and base depth also vary depending on what you're displaying.
For help selecting the right height and configuration for your store, visit our gondola shelving page or contact us directly.
There are several types of retail gondola shelving to consider:
- Double-sided (aisle) gondola units — Used to create shopping aisles in the center of a store.
- Single-sided (wall) gondola units — Sit against walls to maximize perimeter display.
- End cap units — Placed at the end of gondola aisles; great for promotional or featured products.
- Gondola displays with slatwall backing — Allow you to attach slatwall accessories like hooks, bins, and waterfall racks for more flexible merchandising.
Read our blog post, Which Type of Retail Gondola Shelving Is Best for Your Business?, for a deeper breakdown of each option.
Gondola shelving pricing varies based on the height, base depth, number of shelves, and whether you need starter units, add-on units, or end caps. At Store Displays®, gondola shelving for sale starts as low as $107 per unit. We offer competitive volume pricing for larger orders — visit our volume discount pricing page for details. For a custom quote, contact us with your store's dimensions and shelving needs.
Yes. The most basic customization of these units are the dimensions of shelving sections, as we can fulfill any and all lengths made from a combination of 36”, 48” and certain 30” units, in addition to the needed base depths, and lastly the heights. Store Displays® offers gondola shelving with slatwall backing options, allowing you to choose from our available slatwall colors that complement your store's branding. You can also add accessories like upper shelves, pegboard hooks, dividers, and price tag holders to build a fully customized display system. For more extensive customization, our team can work with you on a tailored solution.
Glass Display Cases & Retail Display Cases
A commercial glass display cabinet (also called a showcase or display case) is a retail fixture with glass panels on multiple sides, used to display and protect merchandise. They are commonly used by jewelry stores, vape shops, smoke shops, electronics retailers, sporting goods stores, bakeries, and specialty boutiques. Glass display cases allow customers to view products clearly while keeping high-value or fragile items secure.
Store Displays® carries a wide variety of commercial glass display cabinets, including full-vision cases, extra-vision showcases, tower displays, corner cases, and wall units.
At Store Displays®, our retail display cases come in several styles to suit different store layouts and product types:
-
Extra Vision Showcases — Featuring glass panels on the front and sides, these premium cases offer superior visibility for your merchandise. Swap out the standard back panel for mirror doors to create the illusion of a more spacious display, and add optional LED lighting to highlight your products.
- Standard, corner, and wall style extra vision cases are also the only types of cases we offer the option to add changing LED lighted bases (RGB cases)
- Full Vision Cases — Similar in design to the Extra Vision Showcases, these cases are available in the same 4', 5', and 6' sizes and include two glass shelving rows for maximum product placement. Their wooden frames come in a variety of finishes, making it easy to match the look and feel of your store.
- Tower Displays — Tall, narrow cases that maximize vertical display space with a small footprint.
- Corner Cases — Designed to fit seamlessly into store corners or used to visually connect 2 showcases meeting at the corner to make an 'L' shape.
- Wall Units — Mounted or positioned against a wall for a built-in look.
- Service Counters & Registers — Functional display cases that double as a checkout counter.
Depending on the selection, cases are available in a variety of finishes, with optional LED lighting and mirrored backs.
Glass display cases for retail stores are used to showcase merchandise that is valuable, fragile, or theft-prone — such as jewelry, watches, collectibles, cannabis products, vape items, knives, electronics accessories, sunglasses, and baked goods. The glass construction gives customers a full view of the product while keeping it safely enclosed. Many retailers also use them as a checkout counter, combining function and display in one fixture.
Many of our commercial glass display cabinets offer optional LED lighting, which dramatically improves product visibility and creates a polished, high-end look. LED lighting options can be added at the time of order. If you don't see the configuration you need listed on the product page, contact us and we'll help you find or build the right solution.
Commercial Clothing Racks
Store Displays® offers a full range of commercial clothing racks for retail stores, boutiques, and fashion retailers, including:
- Round racks — Classic circular racks that maximize garment capacity in a small footprint.
- 2-way racks — Hangrails extending in two directions; great for featuring two product categories.
- 4-way racks — Hangrails extending in four directions; efficient for cross-merchandising outfits.
- Ballet bar racks — Sleek, linear racks that present clothing at a single level for a boutique look.
For boutiques, a combination of commercial clothing racks typically works best. Ballet bar racks offer a clean, minimalist presentation that elevates the perceived value of clothing. 2-way and 4-way racks are efficient for maximizing SKU variety without cluttering the floor. Round racks are great for sale or overflow sections. Many boutiques pair clothing racks with mannequins for sale near the entrance to create styled vignettes that draw customers in.
Mannequins
Store Displays® carries a wide variety of mannequins for sale, including:
- Headless mannequins — A sleek, modern option that keeps the focus on the clothing.
- Realistic mannequins — Feature lifelike facial features for a premium visual merchandising look.
- Athletic mannequins — Posed for activewear, sportswear, or performance apparel. Available in both men's athletic mannequins and women's athletics mannequins styles.
- Plus-size mannequins — Essential for inclusive sizing displays.
- Male and female options — Available in a range of poses and skin tones.
Mannequins are one of the most effective tools in retail because they show customers how clothing fits and looks when worn — which significantly increases purchase intent. A well-styled mannequin near a store entrance or window acts as a silent salesperson, drawing shoppers in and helping them visualize complete outfits. For fashion retailers, boutiques, department stores, and activewear shops, investing in mannequins for sale is one of the highest-ROI display decisions you can make.
Gridwall Panels
Gridwall panels are wire grid fixtures used to display merchandise in a variety of retail settings. They are made from durable metal wire arranged in a grid pattern, and can be hung on walls, mounted to freestanding frames, or used as gondola-style floor units. Gridwall panels are highly versatile because they accept a wide range of accessories including hooks, shelves, baskets, waterfalls, and hang rails — making them ideal for displaying apparel, accessories, shoes, tools, packaged goods, and more.
Both gridwall and slatwall are retail wall display systems, but they differ in material and accessories:
- Gridwall consists of an open wire grid. It is lightweight, easy to move, and accepts wire accessories like hooks, shelves, and baskets. Gridwall is popular for pop-up shops, trade shows, beauty supply stores, grocery stores and boutiques.
- Slatwall consists of solid panels with horizontal grooves (slots). It provides a cleaner, more polished look and accepts a broader range of accessories including plastic, metal, and wood options. Slatwall is common in permanent retail installations, including grocery stores.
Both are available at Store Displays®. Browse our gridwall panels and all of our retail displays to find the right fit for your store.
Yes. Gridwall panels can be used as freestanding units with the right base hardware. Store Displays® offers a wide range of base types to fit various displaying needs, such as gridwall gondola display configurations that combine multiple panels with an "H" base and connectors to create a freestanding, double-sided display unit — ideal for the center of a store floor or for trade shows and pop-up retail events; triangle or pinwheel bases with casters to create a spinning, freestanding unit; or simple ‘L’ shape legs to prop up against the wall

- Commercial clothing racks if selling apparel.
- Mannequins to display clothing in context and inspire purchases.

The terms "gondola displays" and "gondola shelving" are often used interchangeably in the retail industry. Both refer to the same type of freestanding shelving unit commonly seen in grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores. You may also hear them called "gondola fixtures" or "retail gondolas." At Store Displays®, our gondola displays include double-sided units, single-sided wall units, and end cap units — all available with various base depths, heights, and backing options.
- Gondola shelving for creating aisles and maximizing floor product capacity.
- Glass display cases for securing and showcasing high-value items.
- Commercial clothing racks if selling apparel.

The best shelving material depends on what you're selling and the look you want to achieve. Metal gondola shelving is the most popular choice for most retail environments because it is durable, adjustable, easy to clean, and capable of holding heavy loads. Wood shelving is often preferred in boutiques, gift shops, or specialty stores for a warmer aesthetic. Wire shelving is common in stockrooms and bakeries.

Store Planning & Setup
A strong store layout starts with gondola shelving, since aisle placement defines your entire floor plan and customer traffic flow — making it the go-to choice for grocery stores, convenience stores, liquor stores, beauty supply shops, pet stores, and more. It's not the right fit for boutiques, where open, editorial spacing takes priority. From there, work outward:
- Plan your aisles first using double-sided gondola shelving to create clear pathways that guide customers through the store.
- Use the perimeter walls for single-sided wall gondola units, slatwall, or gridwall to maximize display space without eating into your floor.
- Place glass display cases near the checkout counter or entrance for high-value items that benefit from visibility and security.
- Position mannequins near the entrance or store windows to draw shoppers in and inspire outfit purchases.
- Reserve end caps (the ends of gondola runs) for promotional, seasonal, or high-margin products — these are your highest-traffic shelf positions.
- Add countertop displays at your point of sale for impulse items.
The goal is a layout that feels intuitive to navigate while maximizing the number of products a customer encounters. Browse our full range of retail displays to start building your floor plan, or contact us for personalized fixture recommendations.
The number of gondola units you need depends on your store's square footage, aisle width preferences, and product volume. As a general rule of thumb used in the industry:
- Convenience stores typically need 4–8 double-sided gondola runs.
- Grocery stores may need 10–20+ runs depending on size.
- Pharmacies and beauty supply stores commonly use 6–12 runs combined with perimeter wall units.
- Liquor stores often need 6–12 runs with deeper shelves to accommodate bottles.
A standard gondola aisle is typically 3 to 4 feet wide to allow comfortable customer flow. When planning, factor in your perimeter walls (single-sided units) separately from your floor aisles (double-sided units). Our team can help you estimate your fixture needs based on your store dimensions — contact us or visit our gondola shelving page to get a quote.
A typical convenience store setup relies heavily on gondola shelving for the main floor aisles, with single-sided wall units along the perimeter. You'll also want:
- Glass display cases near the register for tobacco, vape products, lottery tickets, or other age-restricted and high-value items.
- Countertop displays at the checkout for impulse purchases like candy, lighters, and snacks.
- Pegboard hooks or gridwall panels for packaged goods, snacks, and small accessories.
- Refrigerated shelving (sourced separately) for beverages, but your surrounding dry goods shelving will still be gondola-based.
Store Displays® supplies convenience stores across the country with everything from gondola systems to retail display cases. We offer volume pricing for full store buildouts. See our volume discount pricing page or contact us to get started.
For a clothing boutique, your fixture mix will typically center around apparel rather than shelving. A solid starting point includes:
- Commercial clothing racks — A mix of 2-way, 4-way, and ballet bar racks to organize and present your collections.
- Mannequins — Positioned at the entrance and in windows to display styled outfits and attract foot traffic.
- Wall systems — Every boutique uses their wall space to maximize their space. Most common types used are either the classic wall standards, or from a retail system like the pipeline collection.
- Gridwall panels or slatwall — For wall-mounted display of accessories, folded items, and featured pieces.
- Glass display cases — For jewelry, sunglasses, handbags, or other accessory items you want to protect and highlight.
- A checkout counter — Many boutiques use a glass display case as their checkout counter, combining display and function in one fixture.
The right fixture mix depends on your store's size and aesthetic. Contact us for personalized boutique fixture recommendations.
Slatwall
Slatwall (also called slotwall) is a wall panel system made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with evenly spaced horizontal grooves running across the surface. Retailers mount slatwall panels on their walls and then insert accessories — like hooks, shelves, brackets, baskets, and hang rails — directly into the grooves. This creates a fully customizable, floor-to-ceiling display wall that can be rearranged at any time without tools.
Slatwall is used across virtually every type of retail environment, including apparel stores, shoe stores, hardware stores, salons, and gift shops. It's particularly popular for perimeter walls because it turns blank wall space into high-capacity, organized display space. Store Displays® carries a full range of slatwall panels and accessories.
Both slatwall and gridwall are wall display systems that let you hang accessories like hooks, shelves, and baskets, but they differ in material, appearance, and best use:
| Slatwall | Gridwall | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | MDF wood panel with grooves | Metal wire grid |
| Look | Solid, polished, high-end | Open, modern, industrial |
| Best for | Permanent wall installations | Portable/temporary displays |
| Weight capacity | Higher with metal channel inserts | Moderate |
| Typical cost | Higher | More budget-friendly |
Choose slatwall if you want a clean, finished look for a permanent wall installation and plan to display heavier merchandise like shoes, bags, or packaged goods.
Choose gridwall if you prioritize portability, quick setup, or lower upfront cost — it's especially popular for pop-up shops, trade shows, and boutiques that rearrange frequently.
Both are available at Store Displays®. Browse our gridwall panels and full retail displays shop to compare options.
Visual Merchandising
Well-designed store displays directly influence purchasing behavior in several proven ways:
- Product visibility — Displays place merchandise at eye level and in high-traffic paths, increasing the chance a customer notices and considers a product.
- Outfit and use-case inspiration — Mannequins and styled displays show customers how to use or wear a product, which reduces hesitation and increases basket size.
- Impulse purchases — Countertop and end cap displays near checkout are specifically designed to capture unplanned purchases, which can account for a significant portion of retail revenue.
- Perceived value — Products displayed in glass cases or well-lit showcase environments are perceived as more valuable, supporting higher price points.
- Store navigation — Clear fixture layouts using gondola shelving and proper signage reduce customer frustration and encourage longer browsing time.
Investing in quality store displays is one of the highest-ROI decisions a retailer can make. Read our guide, What Makes Great Retail Displays? Your Complete Guide, for a deeper look at the principles behind effective retail merchandising.
Visual merchandising is the practice of arranging products, fixtures, signage, and store design elements to maximize sales and create a compelling shopping experience. It encompasses everything from how clothing racks are positioned on the floor to how mannequins are styled in a window display to how products are grouped on gondola shelving.
Effective visual merchandising guides customers through your store, highlights featured or high-margin products, reinforces your brand identity, and makes it easy for shoppers to find — and want — what you sell. The fixtures you choose, including retail displays, clothing racks, mannequins, and display cases, are the building blocks of your visual merchandising strategy.
You don't need a massive fixture budget to create a polished retail environment. A few high-impact strategies:
- Invest in gondola shelving first. A well-organized gondola aisle system immediately makes a store look structured and intentional, even if other fixtures are simple. Gondola shelving is ideal for high-SKU retail environments like grocery stores, convenience stores, liquor stores, beauty supply shops, pet stores, and anywhere products need to be displayed in quantity across multiple categories. It's less suited for boutique environments where curated, sparse displays are part of the aesthetic. Our retail gondola shelving starts as low as $107 per unit.
- Use gridwall on your walls. Gridwall panels are one of the most cost-effective ways to turn blank wall space into organized display space.
- Add one or two mannequins near the entrance. Even a single styled mannequin creates a strong visual impression and dramatically elevates how your clothing is perceived. Browse our affordable mannequins for sale.
- Keep displays organized and edited. Overcrowded displays look chaotic regardless of the fixture quality. Less is often more.
- Take advantage of volume pricing. Store Displays® offers volume discounts for larger orders, helping you stretch your budget further when outfitting a full store.
Product Maintenance & Longevity
Glass display cases are relatively low-maintenance, but regular cleaning keeps them looking sharp and professional:
- Glass panels: Use a streak-free glass cleaner and a lint-free microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can scratch tempered glass. Clean both the inside and outside panels regularly — fingerprints accumulate quickly on frequently accessed cases.
- Frame and base: Wipe down with a damp cloth and mild all-purpose cleaner. Avoid soaking joints or hinges.
- LED lighting: Dust LED strips periodically with a dry cloth. LED lights in display cases are long-lasting and typically don't require replacement for years.
- Hinges and locks: Apply a small amount of dry lubricant if doors start to stick or squeak.
For new display case purchases, visit our glass display cases for retail stores page. If you have questions about maintaining a specific model, contact us.
Quality metal gondola shelving is built to last for decades. Because gondola units are made from heavy-gauge steel, they are highly resistant to dents, rust, and wear under normal retail conditions. Many grocery stores and pharmacies use the same gondola shelving systems for 20–30 years, simply reconfiguring the shelves as their product mix changes.
The longevity of your gondola shelving depends on the quality of the steel, the weight loads placed on shelves, and how often units are moved or reconfigured. Investing in commercial-grade units, like those available at Store Displays®, pays off significantly over time versus lighter-duty options. Browse our gondola shelving for sale to see our current inventory.
In most cases, no, and this is an important consideration before purchasing. Gondola shelving systems from different manufacturers are generally not compatible with each other because uprights, base brackets, and upper shelf bracket designs vary by brand — even the smallest changes to these components can compromise parts locking into each other, and therefore, the safety of the shelves. Mixing brands can result in shelves that don't sit level, brackets that don't lock properly, and the overall structure of the unit.
If you are expanding an existing gondola system, it is strongly recommended to purchase add-on units from the same supplier as your original starter units or double check with the vendor to see if their gondola shelving units are 100% compatible with your existing units/brand. If you're starting fresh, choosing a single system from the beginning gives you full flexibility to expand later. Store Displays® can help you identify compatible add-on units, — contact us with your existing unit specifications and we'll find the right match.
Safety & Compliance
Yes. Our upper shelves can hold up to 500 lbs of evenly distributed weight. All of our upper shelves are also designed to tilt downwards at a 17% downslat; when the shelves are purposed at the downslat angle, the weight capacity drops to 200 lbs of evenly distributed weight per shelf. The upright posts and bases also have overall system load ratings. Exceeding weight limits can cause brackets to fail, or units to tip (for single sided units that are not anchored to the wall) creating a safety hazard.
When shopping for retail gondola shelving, always check the per-shelf weight capacity listed in the product specifications and factor in your heaviest products. If you're planning to display particularly heavy items (like canned goods, tools, or bottled beverages), look for heavier-gauge steel options or consider wider shelf depths to distribute the load. Our team can help you identify the right unit for your load requirements. Simply contact us and the experts at Store Displays® will be glad to help!
Double-sided gondola shelving units that are properly assembled are generally freestanding and stable on their own. However, single-sided (wall) gondola units should always be anchored to the wall, as they are inherently less stable without the counterbalance of a second side. In high-traffic environments, stores with children, or locations subject to seismic activity, anchoring all units — even double-sided ones — is a smart safety practice. In certain states with earthquake safety guidelines, like California, it is mandatory to anchor double sided fixtures to the floor.
Always follow the assembly and anchoring guidelines provided with your specific units. If you have safety questions about a particular gondola shelving configuration, contact us and our team can advise.
Most freestanding glass display cases are stable on a level floor under normal retail conditions and do not require anchoring. However, in environments with high foot traffic, young children, or earthquake risk, anchoring display cases to the floor or a back wall adds an important layer of safety. Tower-style display cases with a narrow base footprint are particularly worth securing given their higher center of gravity.
If you're unsure about the stability of a specific case, contact us and we can help you assess the best approach. Browse our full selection of retail display cases.
Pop-Up Shops & Trade Shows
Pop-up shops and trade shows require displays that are lightweight, portable, quick to assemble, and easy to transport. The best options include:
- Gridwall panels — Among the most popular choices for temporary retail. They're lightweight, stack flat for transport, and can be configured as freestanding gondola units or wall panels with the right base hardware.
- Z-racks — Portable folding clothing racks that set up and break down in minutes, perfect for apparel vendors at markets and events.
- Commercial clothing racks — 2-way and 4-way racks with a small footprint maximize display capacity in a tight booth space.
- Countertop display cases — Smaller glass cases protect merchandise and create a professional appearance without requiring a full showcase setup.
- Folding display tables — A versatile base for product presentation that breaks down flat for easy transport.
The key for pop-ups and trade shows is keeping your display kit modular — pieces that can combine in multiple configurations give you flexibility across different booth sizes and layouts. Browse our full retail displays shop to find portable fixture options.
